Quick Plug North America: A Growing Media Company for Over Thirty Years
Quick Plug North America got its start in the 1980’s when Dole Foods was looking for a way to optimize their lettuce seedling production in California. Their search for a stabilized growing medium for large-scale automated transplanting resulted in a partnership with a company that eventually became Quick Plug North America. This collaboration provided Dole with a technology that was initially developed by NASA.
This technology is called Cellular Rooting Sponge® which is essentially a blend of fine peat combined with a foam binder to create a flexible and dimensionally stable rooting substrate. With its strong foundation in large scale field agriculture, the core technology has been adapted for specialty crop application in forestry, horticulture, floriculture, and hydroponics.
Today, in our South Portland, Maine facility, we engineer and manufacture soilless growing media from the highest quality organic peat, other organics and a proprietary foam binder. Our Dutch sales and service office allows us to keep up to date on European trends. We are committed to creating products that work better for our growers and we strive to make these products using innovative technologies that minimize our impact on the environment.
Quick Plug North America’s lines of stabilized growing media are used by growers in the U.S., Europe, the Middle East and Asia to start seeds and root cuttings. Our plugs distinguish themselves by their user friendly format. Their flexibility and the fact that they are a 92-96% organic substrate make them a grower’s top choice. Our technology provides total control of the manufacturing process. This allows us to make a variety of products in numerous shapes, sizes and formulations. They are available direct from our factory for a wide variety of crops and culture practices.
